The Pennsylvania Department of Education established the Teacher Intern Certification as an alternative route to receiving certification through a “professional [intern] certificate that entitles the holder to fill a full-time professional teaching position” (Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, 2025).
Therefore, as part of the path towards certification within the following programs only:
· MEd in Early Childhood Education
· Post-Baccalaureate Certification in Early Childhood Education
· MEd in Health & Physical Education
· Post-Baccalaureate Certification in Health & Physical Education
A student can enroll in the Intern Certification Program at Lancaster Bible College in place of the traditional route of Student Teaching if employed full-time in a permanent position or as a long-term substitute in the area of certification within the state of Pennsylvania.
Enrollment in the Intern Program occurs upon:
- Completion of Post-Bacc or MEd program requirements and coursework
- Passing required state certification tests
- Applying through the TIMS system and receiving the Intern Certificate from PDE
The Intern Certificate allows the student to teach full-time in the area of certification while receiving monthly formal observations from a college supervisor. After one school year with satisfactory ratings on all evaluations, the student will be recommended for Pennsylvania Instructional I Certification.
