Youth & Young Adult Ministry (BA)
Credential: Bachelor of Arts
Majors: Youth & Young Adult Ministry, Biblical Studies
Certification/Licensure: This program is not intended to lead to certification/licensure.
Location: Lancaster
Program Director: Rick Rosati, MA
Program Mission Statement: To help students to embrace and execute all educational opportunities with excellent, holistic, and communal effort.
Program Description: The Youth & Young Adult Ministry program prepares students to engage in all types of adolescent ministry contexts, whether church, parachurch, or non-profit. Key values include: academic rigor, practical/experiential work, biblical guidance, fellowship, prayer, accountable obedience, consistent witness, and play. In addition to class time together, students in the YMN program experience one-on-one mentoring, small groups, retreats, Bible readings, prayer times, hikes, and meals together. In their final two years, students learn from current practitioners in supervised Intern and Practicum experiences which emphasize teaching and program leadership.
Program Learning Outcomes: As a result of this program, students will:
1. Formulate a philosophy of ministry with youth and young adults that is biblically-founded, developmentally appropriate, and culturally sensitive.
2. Develop ministries and relationships with youth and young adults that demonstrate a proper understanding of the psychological, sociological, cultural, and spiritual developmental factors impacting youth and young adults.
3. Form the moral, ethical, and spiritual foundations necessary for personal spiritual growth and sustainable ministry.
4. Build effective personal and professional relationships based on mutual support and accountability for the purpose of intentional ministry development.
5. Design and deliver effective biblical teaching grounded in hermeneutics, learning theory, and comprehensive understandings of adolescent and spiritual development.
6. Demonstrate the professional skills necessary for creating, organizing, and leading a team-based ministry to youth and young adults.
Experiential Learning: We place a high value on field experience in ministry preparation. As a result, all undergraduate Youth & Young Adult Ministry students will complete two substantial field experiences: a 3-credit internship as well as a 3-credit practicum ministry with youth and young adults prior to graduation. Students are responsible for arranging their own field placements in area churches or parachurch ministries. However, the School of Bible & Ministry maintains an active list of ministry field experience opportunities and works closely with students and ministries to ensure a good learning experience.
