SWK 520 Social Welfare Policy: Foundations

This course provides an overview of social policy development, policy practice, and evaluation. Students will explore the process of policy formation and the influence of historical context, social justice movements, and societal values impacting the field of social work. Students will analyze policy from both a direct application perspective as well as from a political perspective. Students will develop an understanding of the legislative process as it applies to the development, implementation, and amendment of social policy. Emphasis will be given to policies that affect constituencies at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels across a variety of fields. Special attention will be placed on activism and advocacy and the role of the Christian social worker.
