Program Mission Statement: The Secondary Education major trains students from a philosophical base which reflects a biblical worldview, to serve as teachers in public and private schools.
Program Description: The Secondary Education Major equips students to teach one academic discipline across grades 7-12 with excellence and professionalism. Coursework and field experiences cultivate understanding of the secondary level learner, implementation of effective instructional practice, and the creation of safe and hospitable learning environments. Students will develop expertise in teaching practice, biblical worldview, and their selected academic discipline.
Program Learning Outcomes: As a result of this program, students will:
1. Integrate knowledge to design coherent learning experiences.
2. Implement safe, equitable, learning-focused environments.
3. Demonstrate effective instructional practices.
4. Demonstrate professionalism.
5. Integrate a biblical worldview.
Experiential Learning: Field placement experiences take place throughout the program, beginning in the first semester and culminating in the final semester with Student Teaching. Field experiences consist of observation, internship, practicum, and student teaching. Students in early education classes complete observations as a part of course requirements. Upperclassmen are assigned to internship, practicum, and student teaching experiences by the Field Placement Coordinator. Student teaching placements occur within a 40-mile radius of LBC unless the student is completing an international experience. Student teachers complete two placements, each 7½ weeks in length in one public and one private school, or one placement of 15 weeks in a public school.

Program Director: Justin Harbin, EdD
Justin serves as an Associate Professor and Program Chair of Secondary Education at Lancaster Bible College. As a third-generation teacher, he has a passion for exploring how the Christian faith rightly orients both academic disciplines and classroom practices. Justin is excited to lead students through significant learning experiences which equip a sense of place and purpose in God’s good world.
