Academic Placement
Incoming on-campus undergraduate students are required to complete one of the following placement options. This process is designed to ensure academic success by placing students in courses appropriate to their current skill levels.
Placement Options: Students may fulfill the placement requirement in one of the following ways:
- Submit Standardized Test Scores (SAT, ACT, or CLT) that meet minimum benchmarks. Scores should be sent to: admissionsoffice@lbc.edu or submitted via the student's Admissions Counselor.
- Transfer in College-Level Credits that are equivalent college-level coursework in writing (English) and/or math. Official transcripts must be received by Admissions.
- Submit equivalent AP or CLEP Test Scores (English Language/Composition or Math) that meet minimum benchmarks. Students should submit official AP/CLEP score reports to Admissions.
- Complete an Accuplacer Placement test administered remotely through the Ally Center. Students sign up via a form sent by their admissions counselor and then receive a test code to the LBC email address. The test must be completed within 4 weeks of receiving the code and it must be completed no later than 1 week before their SOAR date or move-in date (whichever comes first)
Default Placement Policy: If a student does not complete one of the four placement options, they will be automatically enrolled in the following non-credit-bearing remedial courses:
LAN 060 – Writing Fundamentals Introduction to College Reading and Writing
MAT 060 – Basic Math Skills
These courses are designed to build readiness for college-level coursework. While required if placed, they do not count toward graduation. Students must successfully complete these remedial courses before progressing to credit-bearing writing and math courses.
Study Skills
Incoming students who do not meet minimum entrance standards including high school GPA requirements may be given Study Skills requirements, as determined by the Admission Committee. Students are typically placed in at least one remedial course based on an evaluation of high school transcripts, with the opportunity to place out of remedial courses by taking the AccuPlacer or WritePlacer.
Students placed on Study Skills will be limited to 15 credits or fewer during their first semester, placed in a College Success course, and be required to attend weekly academic mentoring appointments and study hours at the Ally Center. Students required to visit Academic Mentoring Services through the Study Skills program will be required to attend 80% of their required appointments. Students will be required to reschedule any missed appointment in accordance with the Ally Center policy. Failure to complete the Study Skills program will result in a recommendation for academic dismissal with the right to appeal.
Students placed on Study Skills will be required to achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater after two semesters enrolled at LBC. Failure to achieve a cumulative 2.0 GPA in this time frame will result in a recommendation for academic dismissal with the right to appeal. The purpose of this requirement is to safeguard students. Students who do not meet admissions criteria are at an elevated risk of not completing college. An increased GPA requirement is meant to help motivate students early in their college career or to clarify if college is the right decision for them.
